Who We Are

Terry Hoff Construction is a fully licensed and insured contracting firm specializing in building custom homes, renovations and remodeling since 1986. Our longstanding network of architects, designers, craftsmen and vendors allows us to confidently deliver a superior quality product that is designed to meet our customers wants, needs and expectations. With an office centrally located on Edisto Island, we build projects across the Lowcountry from Charleston to Beaufort.

Terry personally oversees and manages all of our projects to ensure they result in the highest level of quality.  As a result, we only take on as many projects each year as Terry can personally manage. Whether a beach house on Edisto, a plantation home in the Ace Basin, or a contemporary dream house on Johns Island, all of our projects get the same level of attention from Terry. His commitment and enthusiasm make each project a fun and exciting journey for our customers.

We frequently work with clients from out of state who may only visit a few times during the course of construction. Our success is based on honesty and open communication. We provide detailed monthly reports detailing costs versus budget. This real time update of running cost vs budget allows clients to make mid-course corrections if desired to keep projects on time and on budget – or to indulge the desire for added features. Beyond the monthly reports, we communicate frequently with clients to ensure timely selections and discuss general progress and any issues that arise. Frequent photos of progress are provided to clients who can’t make regular site visits.

Our service doesn’t stop when clients move in. We and our dedicated subcontractors provide prompt support to customers long after completion. Our commitment to service has been rewarded by clients’ high level of satisfaction as measured by Guild Quality survey results. This independent national survey firm interviews all of our clients following project completion. We have been honored to earn their Guildmaster With Highest Distinction award every year since we joined the organization.

  • Terry Hoff

Terry started his career working for the federal government in a four-year tool and die apprenticeship program. He studied through technical schooling and hands on shop training. Later, he furthered his education in management and transferred departments to work in the nuclear fuel world. There he learned the importance of following details and specs, as well as the importance of double checks and built-in safeties. He left there to purse the career of building quality homes which he stills does today. His background from his tool and die along with his nuclear fueling experience is the basis for his exceptional detail and quality. Tool and die demanded tight tolerances and nuclear fueling allowed no room for error, any error could have affected many navy personnel on board submarines.

Terry was raised in a small farm community, taught the values of respect, honesty, hard work and that a handshake is your bond. Blessed to have been brought up in a community built on faith and family, he still lives in that small community of Cottageville, South Carolina. There, he is centrally located to serve clients from downtown Charleston, Edisto, Beaufort and everywhere in between.

One of Terry’s first clients as a young builder told him that he had interviewed several builders that had a lot more experience, but that he was the only one who was as excited as he was to build his home. He advised him to never lose that enthusiasm for his clients’ projects. Over thirty years later Terry continues to remember that advice and is genuinely excited about each new project.

Come and have fun building your home with Terry and get the unmatched detail, quality and service that you deserve!

  • Jeff Neumann

Jeff spent his entire FIRST career working in DuPont’s Life Sciences business. He moved through research, operations, marketing and business development before the business unit was spun off in 2001. Jeff decided to take an early retirement and spent time building furniture in his Boston basement.

In 2004, he and his family packed up and moved into their dream home on Edisto Island – built by none other than Terry Hoff! Jeff and Terry became friends as Jeff followed the construction from start to finish. To him the project was a scaled up version of furniture construction. By that time, Terry had been working most of his building career doing on-the-job supervision of his jobs out of his pick-up. With the growth in custom building for his company and his real passion being job management, he knew it was time to hire an office manager to take care of all the estimating, bidding, ordering, billing and client communication. Coincidentally, after a year on Edisto, Jeff decided he had enough of retirement – too boring for a workaholic young retiree.

Terry and Jeff talked and both sensed a perfect match for their respective needs and skills. Terry needed better bidding, job cost management and reporting – and Jeff brought computer spreadsheet skills. Jeff also brought intense experience in customer communication, support and service. Having interviewed 3 builders and seen their work, Jeff was convinced Terry was the best builder on Edisto and signed on. Fourteen years into his SECOND career he’s still convinced Terry Hoff is the best – and also knows that distinction is partly due to his own efforts.

  • Megan Smoak

Megan is Terry’s oldest daughter. From a young age, Megan would go to work with her dad during school holidays or summers. She has always enjoyed watching her dad’s passion come to life, seeing how he pays such close attention to detail and provides his clients with an honest work ethic making someone’s dream house become reality and being able to enjoy that home for years to come.

Megan started her professional life in the healthcare field by obtaining a degree and working as an occupational therapy assistant. She worked for a home health company for several years before going to work at the local hospital. She thoroughly enjoys helping others, especially when it comes to therapy because you can see the progress patients make while getting them back to their normal daily lives.

An opportunity arose at Terry Hoff Construction for Megan to take on the role as a project manager where she can work with subs, vendors, designers, architects, and clients while managing the office and overseeing jobsites for her dad. Learning the business from the ground up under the leadership of her dad had always been a dream that she wasn’t sure would actually come to fruition. Her prior work experience in the health field, working one-on-one with people every day to improve their physical and mental wellbeing, forming therapeutic relationships, having personal rapport with others, whether it be patients or coworkers, gives Megan a great advantage when it comes to the construction business. It demonstrates the ability to form relationships on a personal level and grow with the clients of Terry Hoff Construction and maintain relationships that have already been established by her dad.

Since coming to work for Terry Hoff Construction in August of 2023, Megan has expanded her knowledge by attending courses to learn more about the construction industry through Contractors Seminar, Inc.

Megan hopes this experience will lead to much more in the future and is more than excited to start this journey alongside her dad.

“Living in Southern California and building a home on Edisto Island may appear to most to be an ominous undertaking. We can say without a doubt it was a positive, enjoyable and successful experience from the beginning to completion, and we attribute the success of our project to our builder, Terry Hoff. From the first piling set into the ground to the last detail before turning over the keys to our beautiful new home, Terry was there every step of the way, providing us with detailed check lists and spreadsheets for cost calculations, and time-lines for decisions to be made. In addition he kept in constant contact with us throughout the building process.”
